Flashback Friday: Remembering the Walkman

Confession: My iPod nano is my travel companion. I almost never go anywhere without it.

I listen to music in my iPod when I go to work, when I have to meet friends, at home to dance the night away, to de-stress and even when I do laundry. I bought mine the same year it cam out, back in 2007 and up to now, it's working perfectly fine! It's very handy noh?

But before the invention of the iPod, I listened to music on my Sony Walkman. Remember that? The bulky and heavy must-have gadget of every pre-teen, teens and even adults who just loved listening to music from cassette tapes and/or the radio? I remember taking strolls with my Walkman clipped to my shorts or placed in my pocket. It used to annoy me its heaviness because it could cause my garter shorts to fall down and because it was bulky, it would sometimes fall out of my pocket. But though that was the case, I never went anywhere without that too once upon a time.

The gadget was made obsolete by the invention of portable CD players and then MP3 players. That's why kids in this new millennium do not know what it is! I saw this video on Youtube and I just had to share it! It made me feel old watching how the kids in the video reacted to the Walkman! Ha ha!

Mind Museum Presents The Apocalypse Project Imagined Futures

Here's an interesting exhibit that's set to open tomorrow, April 25 at The Mind Museum:

The Apocalypse Project Imagined Futures is a speculative design exhibition that explores possible lifestyles as climate change continues to affect the planet. It aims to empower the public to embrace climate change as a personal challenge through the following exhibit areas:
  • T.E.M.P.S (The Ephemeral Marvels Perfume Store) presents: The Smell Bar of Vanishing Scents – a hypothetical perfumery set in the future that makes scents out of things that are disappearing as we know it in the present. Get to smell the ozonic freshness of coasts, which may be swallowed up due to rising sea levels!
  • Climate Change Couture: Volume 2, Manilahighlights potential climate scenarios through  fashion design. Check out how the Barong Tagalog can adapt to the fickle city weather! Or how about a terno that can double as a floatation device during floods?
  • The Fadelist: Tracks of Endangered Sounds - showcases sounds that are disappearing because of climate change. Listen to the sounds of a koala bear... being drowned by the sounds of carbon-emitting vehicles
  • The Climatoscope: Futurescapes of Planet Earthbrings back the iconic Viewmaster from decades ago and allows guests to play with the nostalgic toy, this time with environmental images about Planet Earth.
  • The Planetary Poetry Boardis an interactive activity where guests are invited to create their own spontaneous poem. Roll the dice, land on the prompt, and write the first thing that comes to mind. So, what would you like to tell a blade of grass?

The exhibit, first launched in 2013 at ArtScience Museum in Marina Bay Sands, Singapore, is the first solo exhibition by artist and scientist, Catherine Sarah Young in close collaboration with The Mind Museum’s Curator, Maria Isabel Garcia.  As an artist, scientist, designer, explorer, and writer, Catherine’s work combines the arts and the sciences to create stories, objects, and experiences that facilitate wonder and human connection. The exhibition tackles specific questions: What are disappearing because of climate change? How do we adapt? How can we train ourselves to think deeper about the future of the planet?

Climate change is inevitable. It's already happening! So while we continue to spread the word and convert the public to live a greener lifestyle, it's also a must that we prepare for the future that climate change brings. This exhibit gives us a chance to imagine what it would be like. I think that this will be a cool exhibit to check out. The first exhibit I checked out at The Mind Museum was Da Vinci Exhibit during my first ever visit at the museum and I found that truly educational so I want to drop by Mind Museum again for this exhibit.

This exhibit will definitely be enlightening as the title connotes. Did you guys know that "Apocalypse" contrary to popular belief that it means end-of-the-world, the word actually means "disclosure" or "lifting of the veil" in its Greek origin?

If you're free tomorrow, you can check out The Apocalypse Project on opening day. Kids and adults alike can learn a lot from this! After all, saving the planet isn't a job for just one man. It should be a joint effort by all mankind.

Join them for a special MISSION APOCALYPSE activity. Participate in the scavenger hunt mission throughout the museum's exhibits and if you're part of the first 500 participants to complete all tasks of the mission, you'll get an Apocalypse Badge as Commander of the Apocalypse, defender of the future.

All Day Pass tickets to The Mind Museum are on sale for only P450 until May 31, 2014. It's open
Tuesdays – Sundays, from 9am-6pm, with extended hours on Saturdays until 9pm.

And another part of my childhood ends...

Nicholas Gene Carter aka Nick Carter, blonde and blue eyed baby of the Backstreet Boys and my first ever foreign celebrity crush has tied the knot!

I'm such a fan of the Backstreet Boys. Throughout my teen years, I collected the CDs, the tapes and the video CDs - The making of BSB documentary and concert videos alike and I bought the magazines that featured BSB. And I was head over heels over the youngest member of the band, Nick.

I super loved Nick's cute and kinda cocky smile in this music video of I Want It That Way.  Never failed to make me swoon

I remember watching MTV just to see their music videos (YouTube wasn't around back then) and screaming everytime their video comes on screen. And yes like a lot of teenage girls back then, I fantasized what it would be like to meet the boys in person especially Nick and what it would be like to be Mrs. Nick Carter.

Now one lucky woman, Lauren Kitt, gets to be her. Have to admit that while I'm still a fan, my craziness over Backstreet Boys, over Nick, is no longer as strong as before they took the break. But Nick, I will always and forever think of you fondly.

And now that my favorite Backstreet Boy is married, it still feels like a part of my childhood has ended... Oh well. Life goes on. No matter where life takes me though,  I will forever be a loyal fan of the Backstreet Boys.

Congratulations Nick and Lauren!

My Blog Just Got a Makeover...

...Okay so technically the blog makeover has been around for about two weeks now but I'm only getting around to blogging about it.

I've been a blogger for years now - long before blogging even became a profession - though I deleted my old personal blog - but one of the things that I've always been frustrated about when it comes to blogging is finding a design I would love.

I used to spend hours scouring free blog templates on Blogskins 'til I found the one that would catch my eye. But then I got tired of doing that. And then I tried Shabby Blogs and I stuck with the design I picked out for years because again I just got too lazy to spend hours searching for a new replacement. Plus for quite awhile, I had abandoned blogging so...

Anyway, when I found my blogging groove back, I decided it was high time to update my blog design too! Enter Fancy Girl Designs! I found out about Patricia's work through Frances of Topaz Horizon because I just love reading her blog and when she got her blog design updated, she blogged about the designer.

As soon as I saw Patricia's works on her Facebook page, I knew I just had to avail of her service too. I seriously love most - if not all - of the designs she's made! It's so feminine, so colorful and basically just lovely! Her designs were exactly what I was looking for!

I just love my new blog's design - a combination of green and orange, an idea I got from browsing a wedding magazine one time while my friends and I were hanging out at Dunkin Donuts in Mall of Asia. I was initially going for a pastel color combination look (a lot of the designs I've been loving in Patricia's page had pastel colors).

Truth be told, I don't have an eye for design. I just know that I love something when I see it. But I can't really describe it in detail. I can only go as far as color. Ha ha!  That's why I was initially afraid that the colors I picked wouldn't work because they were both strong colors. But Patricia just made it work!

This citrusy design is just perfect for summer! I super love it!

It was so easy to work with Patricia and her design fee is affordable too. I'm so happy about this new blog look! It makes me want to blog so much more often. (",) You betcha I'm gonna come back to her once I feel like doing some more improvements on my blog.

Top 5 new songs I'm loving

Because I'm in the mood of updating my iPod playlist, here are some of the songs I've just recently come to love...

1. Taylor Swift ft. Ed Sheeran - Everything Has Changed

'Cause all I know is we said, "Hello."
And your eyes look like coming home
All I know is a simple name
Everything has changed
All I know is you held the door
You'll be mine and I'll be yours
All I know since yesterday is everything has changed

I just wanna know you better, know you better, know you better now
I just wanna know you, know you, know you

2.  John Legend - All of Me

'Cause all of me
Loves all of you
Love your curves and all your edges
All your perfect imperfections
Give your all to me
I'll give my all to you
You're my end and my beginning
Even when I lose I'm winning
'Cause I give you all of me
And you give me all of you, oh

3.  Christina Perri - Human

But I'm only human
And I bleed when I fall down
I'm only human
And I crash and I break down
Your words in my head, knives in my heart
You build me up and then I fall apart
'Cause I'm only human

4. Ed Sheeran - Give me Love

Give a little time to me or burn this out,
We'll play hide and seek to turn this around,
All I want is the taste that your lips allow,
My, my, my, my, oh give me love

Give me love like never before,
'Cause lately I've been craving more,
And it's been a while but I still feel the same,
Maybe I should let you go

5. Tori Kelly - Dear No One

So if you're out there I swear to be good to you
But I'm done lookin' for my future someone
Cause when the time is right
You'll be here, but for now
Dear no one, this is your love song

Officially a Lenovo brand convert

Here's the thing - when it comes to buying gadgets, I'm a total girl.  While most people who's out to buy a new gadget research about the best specs in the market and look for the product(s) that have those, I look at the design above everything else like I'm just picking out new clothes or shoes to wear. Don't get me wrong - good specs are important when buying a gadget but if you want to close a sale with me, talk to me about the design first and then tell me the specs. I'm not a very techie person though the accounts I handle are in the business of technology.

The gadget must look stylish to appeal to me - proof 1 - my LG feature phone and proof 2 - my HP laptop. Well actually when it comes to PC brands, my brand of choice had always been HP mostly because that's the brand that my Dad trusted. But now, I am officially declaring that I have made the switch! Now, I am officially a fan of Lenovo!

They make such stylish products with equally good specs. Here are the gadgets that I've got my eyes on:

Lenovo Yoga Tablet

Ashton Kutcher helped design this tablet for Lenovo. He's the endorser. Sosyal noh? I'm not really big on tablets - actually don't own an iPad - but when I saw this, I thought I'd love to get one! See other than looking stylish, this tablet unlike the rest can stand on its own. It's one of its three modes - hold, stand and tilt. And it has a long battery life of up to 18 hours! Amazing right?

I've been thinking about replacing my LG feature phone. While I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone, I'm still thinking of buying another phone to use for work and I'm thinking of getting another Lenovo product - the Lenovo Vibe X.

It's so thin - 6.99 mm and light - 121 g! I also find the silver color beautiful. But what I love most about this smartphone is that it's got a 13 megapixel rear camera and a 5 megapixel front camera with 180 degrees wide angle viewing - so great for selfies! Plus this phone already comes with a lot of photo effects for those who like creative shots. Personally love the beauty effect. It makes you want to take a whole lot of selfies!!!

And as for PC, I recently purchased a Lenovo laptop to replace my old, clunky laptop at work. Meet my Lenovo Yoga 13", another multimode gadget from Lenovo.

I'm super in love with the color! Clementine Orange! So fashionable noh? It's also very light - I feel like I'm just holding a book or a handbag which is great because I hate lugging around the heavy laptop. It can be converted into four modes:

Tablet mode
I've recently started reading e-books and I don't like reading it in my phone because the screen's small. Since this laptop can be converted into tablet mode, I'm going to try reading e-books using this from now on. And that's another reason why I haven't bought a tablet yet. But we'll see right? The Yoga Tablet is still very appealing to me.

Stand mode
Tent mode

And of course, laptop mode.

I also love that it's black on the inside because it looks sleeker this way and at least this way when it's dirty, it's not so obvious. Haha! And did I mention that it's touch screen? Pretty cool!

P.S. Photos are not mine. All grabbed from the net.

Flashback Friday: Popular

Confession: When I'm having an introvert weekend, I mostly spend it watching TV series whether on DVD or online. It's actually one of the things that my cousin, Mark and I love doing together.

Well, a few weeks ago, I was checking out's Candy Blog for ideas on a PR Communications plan I was doing for my client when I stumbled upon Marla's post about Popular. It's one of the earliest American TV series I remember watching when I was a teenager.

Gosh how I loved that show! It's about these two teenage girls, Brooke McQueen and Samantha McPherson and their highschool cliques and their lives at the opposite ends of the popularity scale. A lot of things drew me to this show - cute guys (one jock and one geek cute), snappy dialogue especially that of Nicole - the other bitchy popular blonde character - and a good soundtrack to boot! Here's Kendall Payne's Supermodels - the theme song of Popular.

I also love the plot line because it showed that while these teens lived such different lives they were all complex characters - the jock who secretly wanted to be a theater actor, the beauty queen cheerleader who thinks she's still fat even though she's already darn sexy...

Popular was actually created by Ryan Murphy - yes the Ryan Murphy, who gave us Glee. Oh and I only realized that Sandra Oh, the actress who plays Cristina Yang in Grey's Anatomy was also part of the show.
My friends and I loved Popular. Unfortunately, it didn't last long. It went off the air only after 2 seasons (I never even finished season 2. Was it ever finished???) and I was seriously bummed when that got cancelled! But thanks to Marla, now I know that Popular can be streamed online! Oh the wonders of the Internet!

So this is how I'm spending the rest of my Friday today since I got off early from work. It takes me back to my own high school days. (",)
