With Valentine’s Day already this weekend, I thought it was only fitting to go watch a romantic film. I really love romantic movies. For those who’ve been a regular reader of this blog, you’ve most likely encountered a romantic Valentine’s move or two I’ve recommended over the years.

In the mood to watch a romantic Valentine’s movie too? Here’s my review of As Good As It Gets, now streaming on Netflix.

When the bigoted, compulsive writer, Melvin’s gay neighbor is brutally assaulted, he is forced to take care of his dog. He falls in love with a waitress and the three form an unlikely friendship.

Netflix

This 1997 movie stars Jack Nicholson, Helen Hunt and Greg Kinnear. They all earned Academy Awards nominations for the movie. Two of its stars (Nicholson and Hunt) won. Best Actor and Best Actress in a Leading Role.

Did not see this film then? Not surprised. It was shown at the same time as Titanic.

I knew about As Good As It Gets from trailers on VCDs. Remember those days? I think Dad talked about this film too. He had his fair share of favorite romantic movies of all time.

What I Thought of As Good As It Gets

Melvin Udall is an eccentric guy. He’s not at all like the usual charming leading men of romantic movies. Jack Nicholson is certainly no Leo Dicaprio or Tom Hanks. Still he has a certain charm to him! I don’t know if any other actor could have pulled it off.

It was fun to watch Melvin’s character development. He starts off as the guy you’d love to hate, hurling insults that are sure to wound you. Get along with apartment building neighbors? Not Melvin! He hates everyone! At the start of the movie, you’d see Melvin throw an adorably cute dog down the garbage chute.

As the story progressed, so did his relationship with the others. I found myself smiling at certain scenes with Melvin and Simon. Plus the dog, Verdell.

Carol had her fair share of demons. She was a single mom with an asthmatic son. Her whole life was about caring for her sick son. When the only thing she knew how to do was gone, she finds herself at a loss.

She was a waitress at the restaurant where Melvin habitually eats breakfast at. Carol was the only one who would serve him.

I love how the film slowly progresses. It took me through the growth development of both characters. Their interactions went from transactional to something more.

My Favorite Scene from the Movie

This is my favorite scene in the movie. Melvin gives Carol the best compliment ever! Swoon worthy!

Is It Worth Watching?

It’s an unconventional romance but As Good As It Gets is worth the watch! It will be sure to make your heart melt!
