What’s your tell tale sign that Christmas is coming? For me, it’s when I start seeing Facebook memes of Jose Mari Chan being shared online. For those of you who are not from the Philippines, he is a popular singer songwriter whose Christmas song you will hear everywhere you go around the Christmas holidays.
Growing up, it is when Jose Mari Chan’s Christmas in Our Hearts Christmas classic starts to play that I start to feel the Christmas spirit which I would say is as early as September because that’s when the malls start to play Christmas songs. Of course there are other tell tale signs that Christmas is just around the corner such as the release of Starbucks’ Red Cups (holiday drinks), Christmas countdown signs at the mall and decors. At home, during this time, our home would already be adorned with red and green decors along with the Christmas tree.
This year, the home holiday decors won’t be put up but it doesn’t mean I’m not feeling Christmas-y. I’ve in fact found myself listening to Christmas songs since December 1st came rolling around. But while I have an ever growing Christmas playlist on Spotify, I do have top 5 songs that I love listening to during this time of the year.
1. All I Want for Christmas is You by Mariah Carey
It’s such a fun and upbeat song! Mariah Carey snow sledding on her music video of this song, wearing an all red outfit has been forever etched on my mind although I know she had a newer version of the music video. I am sure you’ve heard this song before because other artists like Michael Buble have done covers. Do you love this song too? Here are some facts about All I Want for Christmas is You.
I’ve always associated this song to someone I like because as the lyrics goes “I just want you for my own. More than you could ever know. Make my wish come true. Baby all I want for Christmas is youuu!”  Actually, there is one particular guy I used to associate this song to. A guy I once had a major crush on at the gym! This song played right at that moment I was with the guy and I thought how apt for this song to play! While I no longer like that guy, my love for this song remains.
2. Last Christmas by Wham
Such a happy track but with lyrics that tell a different story! It’s also become such a classic hit that so many artists have also done covers.
There’s just so many emotions in this song!
Hurt and Anger
“Last Christmas I gave you my heart but the very next day you gave it away.”
“I wrapped it up and sent it with a note saying I love you I meant it. Now I know what a fool I’ve been”
Denial

“Once bitten and twice shy, I keep my distance but you still catch my eye”

“Last Christmas I gave you my heart but the very next day you gave it away. This year, to save me from tears, I’ll give it to someone special.”
Hopeful

“But if you kiss me now, I know you’d fool me again.”

I’ve specially loved playing this song over and over again when I got my heart broken. It was cathartic to listen and sing along to Wham’s Last Christmas.
3.  Last Christmas by Glee
Like I said, Wham’s Last Christmas has been covered by so many! Even Glee did a cover and I loved it! I specially loved it because I was a shipper of FinChel (Finn Hudson and Rachel Berry) who did a duet of this song.
4. Santa Tell Me by Ariana Grande
Ariana sings about her hesitation to giving her heart away to a guy because she’s scared he might just break her heart so she’s asking Santa for answers. “Santa tell me if you’re really there, don’t make me fall in love again if he won’t be here next year. Santa tell me if he really cares…”
It’s been quite awhile since a possible love and romance had presented itself to me so I am just living vicariously through this song.
5. Mistletoe by Justin Bieber

This Bieber song makes me want to fall in love. He’s singing about having someone special with him whom he loves spending time with. My favorite lyrics from this song “Aye, love, the wise men followed the star, the way I followed my heart and it led me to a miracle”.
Maybe someday I could feel that way about someone special too and I’d find myself celebrating the most beautiful time of the year with him. For now, I’ll settle for Justin Bieber crooning.

6. My Only Wish (This Year) by Britney Spears
It’s probably my being single on yet again another Christmas holiday that I love this song. It’s a fun pop tune but Britney is singing about wishing for a lover from Santa Claus. It’s a cute song but sadly not as popular as Mariah’s All I Want for Christmas.
7. A Perfect Christmas by Jose Mari Chan

Okay so remember how I said Jose Mari Chan memes are popular on Facebook when -ber months come around? Well that’s because the man did release very nice Christmas songs! This one’s my fave. In it, he sings about how spending time with the one he loves makes for the perfect way to spend Christmas which I am sure couples everywhere can relate to.

Do you also have go-to songs for Christmas? I’d love to know what songs you listen to. I’m always adding songs to my Spotify playlist.
