A movie genre I’ve watched a lot of is romantic comedies. Growing up, Dad and I watched quite a number of them. Some of his faves were Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail, The American President, and Notting Hill. It’s been a while since I’ve watched one so when a friend told me about the movie, The Idea of You, I renewed my Prime Video subscription and made it part of my weekend watch list.

What’s The Idea of You movie all about?

The Idea of You is a romantic comedy movie starring Anne Hathaway as a 41-year-old divorced woman, Solène Marchand who also owns a small art gallery in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles. When her ex-husband bails on his promise to their daughter, Izzy, to take her and her friends to Coachella to see her seventh-grade boy band idols, August Moon, Solène had to take them.

It’s at Coachella that she has her meet-cute moment with boy band singer, Hayes Campbell played by Nicolas Galitzine. She mistakes his trailer for a port-a-potty. She doesn’t recognize him of course. But he was instantly smitten with her and her normalcy. He even dedicates a song to her during their performance at Coachella.

He then tracks her down at her art gallery, buys the entire art collection displayed there and then they go to her house for lunch because where else could he escape the paparazzi and his screaming fans? They exchange stories and a kiss and so their May-December love affair.

The Idea of You is based on a book by Robinne Lee. I read this is an inspired Harry Style fan fiction.

Is The Idea of You Worth Watching?

First of all, Anne Hathaway playing a forty-something woman? I still see her as a geeky-looking nobody in high school turned Princess of Genovia, Amelia “Mia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi. That means I’m old! LOL! Still, even at 41, Anne is gorgeous. Who wouldn’t fall for that beauty?

And Nicolas is also a cutie. He’s perfect as the lonely English pop superstar. I give him props for holding his own, acting alongside Anne. And they have. good on-screen chemistry together. They felt real to me.

It’s a cute romcom movie though the plot is nothing I haven’t seen before. May-December love affair – Something’s Gotta Give! Superstar falls in love with a non-celebrity – Notting Hil! Incidentally, this movie has several similarities to the latter but unlike Notting Hill, this, for me, feels forgettable. It doesn’t have so much depth. But you know, in fairness to the screenwriters, they were basing this on a book. I’ll let this movie review tell you more about that.

It may not make it on my list of all-time favorite romantic comedy movies, still, I say, it’s worth watching. The Idea of You is now available on Prime Video.

August Moon Songs Could Be A Hit

I will not end this review of The Idea Of You without mentioning August Moon, the boy band that Hayes Campbell is a member of, and their songs.

They had really catchy songs written for this movie that’ll make you bop to the music and swoon: Taste, Closer, Dance Before We Walk, and Guard Down. If August Moon was an actual boyband, they’d make it big with the preteen and teen girls alike. The songs are similar to the kind One Direction used to sing.
